Forecast for the Future

Sharing research results with families

Project Background

Participants in clinical trials and other research projects do not always receive information on aggregated study results. We were asked by a medical anthropologist to use our storytelling approach to communicate research findings to families who participated in one of the studies from the Clinical Sequencing Evidence-Generating Research (CSER) consortium.

Our Work

We produced a comic book to reflect the experience of participating families, based on interviews and aggregated study results. Our story follows a fictional mother, Melena, whose child, Victoria, has a developmental issue affecting her ability to walk and speak. Like many parents, Melena receives uncertain results from her child's genetic test and must figure out how to navigate the future.

Results

English and Spanish language versions of Forecast for the Future are being distributed to study participants. In 2024, the comic won a Gold Award in the Booklet/Brochure/Pamphlet Category in the 31st annual National Health Information Awards. Research on the project is published in Genetics in Medicine Open.
