Preparing families to discuss hereditary cancer
Project Background
Genetic counselors at this NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center asked us to help develop a standardized package of basic information for patients. The goal of the project was to save staff time and provide patients with a basic overview of genetics and hereditary cancer.
Our Work
We designed a set of materials for use before, during, and after the genetic counseling appointment. The videos can be watched before meeting with the genetics counselor. The print materials can be used to support the conversation during the appointment and for family discussions after the appointment.
Results
The materials are used by the cancer center for hereditary cancer risk assessment conversations. They have been so useful that the team is seeking funding to expand on this content.
