Diabetes Whiteboard Videos
Helping families understand type 1 diabetes
Project Background
When children are first diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, parents have a lot to learn in a short amount of time. We were asked by a children’s hospital to develop a comprehensive set of patient education videos to explain basic information parents need to understand before their children are discharged.
Our Work
We developed over an hour of educational video content that explains what diabetes is and how insulin works to manage this complex medical condition. The videos also cover what to do when children have blood sugar outside the target range and how to adjust for meals and physical activity. The visual characters include people but also anthropomorphized medicine and cell characters.
Results
With over 100,000 views on YouTube, our What is Diabetes? video and others in this series continue to be a research tool for families.
